RapidMind releases Beta version of their Development Platform v2.0 including support for the Cell BE processor

Waterloo, Ontario - July 18, 2006 - RapidMind Inc. announced today that it was releasing the Beta version of the RapidMind Multi-core Development Platform v2.0 to select customers and partners.

RapidMind is an innovator in providing a development platform for processors such as graphics processing units (GPUs). The RapidMind platform v2.0 includes new language features to make it even easier for developers to write an even broader set of applications for these high performance, yet difficult to program processors. With the addition of support for the Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell BE) processor, developers will now be able to create applications to target platforms with this processor, including the IBM® BladeCenter® Server.

“This Beta is an important step towards our release of the RapidMind platform v2.0 later this summer,” said RapidMind President and CEO, Ray DePaul. “Our customers have shown strong interest in getting their hands on this release to quickly leverage these high-performance processors.”

These new processors provide an exciting opportunity for developers of high-performance applications. For example, in the digital media arena including image processing and content generation, developers are looking to create or manipulate very large images. With the new technology, not only can these operations be done much faster, but in some cases processes that were once done offline can now be performed in real time.

“There is clearly a lot of interest in evaluating GPUs and the Cell BE processor for the purposes of accelerated computing,” said DePaul. “What we are seeing is that developers are looking to RapidMind as a much easier way to get up and running and perform the necessary benchmarking. If the application developer can quickly accelerate their application using RapidMind and these new processors, everybody wins.”
